Week 6: The Table of Chosen Family

By Desi Stout, Youth Ministry Assistant

Not long ago, I was scrolling through social media and saw the quote, “Stay close to people who feel like sunshine.” I started thinking about the people in my life who fit that description—friends who are kind, fun, and make you feel loved. Sometimes it’s a text that brightens your day, a quick hug on a Sunday morning at church, or the joy of getting together for a meal.

Two of my close friends and I try to meet for lunch or dinner every few months to catch up on life. Our sons grew up together, and we’ve walked with one another through so many seasons—change, challenges, celebrations over the years. We’ve journeyed together from the early years of parenting little ones, through the rollercoaster of adolescence, and now into our new phase of being empty nesters.

Our most recent dinner was at Fuzzy’s, our usual spot, at the end of February. It was one of those rare, magical February days in Oklahoma—sunny, warm, and not too windy—so we were able to sit on the patio. It felt like a gift! There’s something sacred about spending time with people who support you, encourage you, pray for you and your family—as you do for theirs.

In John 12:1–8, we’re reminded that even Jesus needed that kind of time with close friends. A meal. A moment to rest and relax. Deep conversation. Space to be fully known and deeply loved. Martha, Mary, and Lazarus didn’t just serve him—they welcomed him as chosen family.

We are called to that same life of love and hospitality. To live in community. To open our homes and our hearts. And sometimes, that looks like chips and queso with a side of laughter—served on a patio with people who feel like sunshine.

Prayer: Loving God, thank you for surrounding me with people whose presence feels like sunshine. Bless the chosen family who walk alongside me, filling my life with love, laughter, and support. Amen

Practicing Our Faith: Fast from hurry to feast on holy presence

This week, carve out ten slow, uninterrupted minutes to rest in God’s presence. Find a quiet place to sit, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. Let the rush of the day settle. Now, in your imagination, picture a long, welcoming table—sunlight spilling across it, the hum of laughter in the air. Seated around the table are the people who have been your chosen family—those who have loved you well, prayed for you, supported you. See their faces. Hear their voices. Feel the warmth of their presence. And at the center of the table: Jesus, smiling, relaxed, fully present with all of you. Linger here. Let your heart be nourished by the memory of belonging and the hope of connection. Offer a silent prayer of gratitude for this holy table, and ask God how you might extend that same presence to others.

Sharing the Feast: Putting God’s Love in Action
Arrange a casual gathering—coffee, a meal, or snacks—with friends or neighbors, especially those who might be lonely or needing encouragement. Invite them into your circle of sunshine, extending the hospitality and love Jesus modeled.

Reflection questions:

  1. Who are the people in your life that make you feel supported, loved, and joyful simply by their presence?

  2. How can you extend Christ-like hospitality, or create a sacred moment of connection this week, that can deepen your relationship with chosen family?
